Choosing the right birthing and recovery plan is one of the most important decisions an expectant mother can make. At My Womb Maternity Care, we provide expert guidance on surgical deliveries and specialized post-delivery care across Chennai, Bangalore, and all major cities in Kerala (including Ernakulam, Cochin, Aluva, Thripunithura, Kaloor, Kakkanad, and Edapally).
A Cesarean section (C-section) is the surgical delivery of a baby through two precise incisions: one made in the mother’s abdomen and another in the uterus.
While natural births are generally prioritized, C-sections are highly safe, routine procedures performed when a traditional vaginal delivery poses risks to the mother or child. Obstetricians generally avoid scheduled C-sections before 39 weeks of pregnancy to ensure the baby’s lungs and brain are fully developed in the womb, unless medical complications require an earlier delivery.
A C-section can be planned early in the pregnancy or decided emergently during labor. The most common reasons an Obstetrician or Gynecologist will recommend a C-section include:
Fetal & Labor Complications: Stalled labor, reduced oxygen supply to the baby, or developmental conditions.
Baby's Position & Size: Breech birth (feet first), transverse labor (shoulder first), or macrosomia (the baby's head is too large for the birth canal).
Maternal Health Factors: Severe high blood pressure, unstable heart disease, or active genital herpes that could be transmitted during a vaginal birth.
Placental & Cord Issues: Placenta previa, placental abruption, or umbilical cord prolapse.
Previous Deliveries: A history of a prior C-section delivery.
Understanding the steps of a Cesarean delivery can significantly reduce prenatal anxiety. Your medical team will prepare you thoroughly before entering the operating room.
Your abdomen will be sanitized, and an intravenous (IV) line will be started in your arm to administer fluids and medications. A catheter will also be placed to keep your bladder empty during the surgery. Your blood type is always recorded in advance as a standard safety protocol.
Your Gynecologist and Anesthesiologist will select one of three types of anesthesia:
Spinal Block: An injection directly into the sac surrounding your spinal cord, numbing the lower half of your body instantly while keeping you awake.
Epidural: A common anesthesia for both vaginal and C-section births, delivered via a small catheter into your lower back outside the spinal sac.
General Anesthesia: Used primarily in rapid emergency situations to put the mother into a painless sleep.
Once the area is completely numbed, the doctor makes a horizontal incision just above the pubic hairline (which heals into an easily coverable, discreet scar). In rare emergency situations, a vertical incision may be necessary. A screen is placed so you do not have to visually witness the surgery.
The baby is gently removed from the uterus, their nose and mouth are cleared of fluids, and the umbilical cord is clamped and cut. While the hospital staff checks your newborn and prepares to place them in your arms, your doctor repairs the uterus with dissolving stitches and closes the abdominal incision.
While increasingly common, a C-section is still a major abdominal surgery. Expect to stay in the hospital for three to four days immediately following the procedure.
Post-surgical bleeding or blood clots
Infection at the incision site
Surgical injury to surrounding pelvic organs
Temporary breathing issues for the baby (more common if delivered before 39 weeks)
Longer physical recovery times compared to natural birth
Immediately after surgery, your IV will deliver adjusted pain medication as the anesthesia wears off. Nurses will encourage you to stand up and walk within the first 24 hours to prevent deep vein thrombosis (blood clots) and alleviate constipation.
Tip for New Mothers: A lactation consultant or nurse will teach you specialized breastfeeding positions (like the football hold) to prevent the baby from putting painful pressure on your fresh abdominal incision.
Fully recovering from pregnancy and a Cesarean birth can take several months. While many mothers feel significantly better by 6 to 8 weeks, true healing requires patience, rest, and targeted physical care.
Rest & Support: Avoid heavy lifting and use correct posture to properly support your core and abdomen.
Hydration: Drink plenty of water and clear fluids to replace fluid loss and ease digestion.
Pelvic Rest: Strictly avoid sexual intercourse for four to six weeks post-delivery.
Pain Management: Take prescribed pain medications consistently as directed by your doctor.
Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any of these warning signs:
A fever over 100°F (37.7°C) or signs of incision infection (redness, swelling, or leaking fluid).
Foul-smelling vaginal discharge or passing unusually large blood clots.
Severe breast pain accompanied by a fever (signs of mastitis).
Pain or burning sensations when urinating.
Symptoms of postpartum depression, including severe mood swings, intense anxiety, or overwhelming emotional fatigue.
